Carl Ramage's Story

"The reality is you must create the habit of being consistent. You see and feel the cumulative benefits and results only when you look back down the track..."

Meet Carl, or as some of us call him The Doctor!

Carl has been part of our community for over 5 years and helped pioneer our Mana Men program. Always supportive, caring and such an inspiration to our tribe!

WHAT IS THE BIGGEST HURDLE YOU HAVE HAD TO OVERCOME TO FOCUS ON YOU?

I have always struggled with accepting the difference between selfishness and self-care. I often feel guilty going to the gym or playing rugby with a sense that I am being selfish, when in fact they are both important for my overall wellbeing (physical and mental). I still struggle with this constantly.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT YOUR JOURNEY WITH MANA FITNESS?

There is a fantastic fellowship and supportive atmosphere at Mana Fitness. It is the 'norm' that everyone is on their own journey and each of us are supported towards our individual goals. There is no judgement, just a friendly smile and genuine interest in 'how you are'. The programs offer something for every ability and exercises are tailored to accommodate any injuries or restrictions. I don't feel like a number, but a part of the Mana Tribe. That really helps motivate me to keep coming back and to prioritise my journey.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT FIRE?

I enjoy the opportunity to focus on technique rather than the weight and to learn about how to lift safely. Having ongoing injuries and some limitations from previous surgeries I enjoy learning about the science behind working specific muscles and muscle groups and the alternative exercises that are available. I also enjoy the encouragement from the Mana Team that give you just the right amount of push to ensure you're just a little bit uncomfortable and maximising the benefits of FIRE.

HOW HAVE YOU APPROACHED YOUR MENTAL WELLNESS AND HOW HAVE YOU WORKED ON IT?

I guess it's been difficult for me to really know what mental wellness is and whether I am mentally well. I have high-functioning anxiety that provides a constant daily challenge. I also work alone most of the time and I travel a lot. So, I have learned that the simplest and little things often have the biggest beneficial impact on my mental wellness. Coming to Mana provides me with a supportive environment to connect with the trainers and other members. No matter how low I feel going to the gym, I always leave feeling lighter and happier and I am always greeted with smile and a genuine interest in how I am. I also try to take in and enjoy the journey to wherever I am travelling. For example, there is nothing more beautiful that driving along an Australian country road, seeing the canola fields in flower, the fog lifting off the paddocks or the amazing colours of a sunrise or sunset. I've learned to take in these moments and to appreciate them.

WHAT IS THE BIGGEST LESSON YOU HAVE LEARNED THROUGHOUT YOUR JOURNEY?

One of the Mana Tribe members made me appreciate and accept that the key is consistency and to enjoy the journey rather an obsess over the destination. Sounds simple but often the simplest answer is the right one. Whilst it is important to set achievable goals, they need to be realistic and that 'results' come from implementing several small changes consistently. We often find it hard to see 'results' and expect that they will be dramatic and immediate. I know I have had those expectations at times. The reality is you must create the habit of being consistent. You see and feel the cumulative benefits and results only when you look back down the track. This has been my biggest lesson.

DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR ANYONE THINKING ABOUT JOINING ANY OF OUR MANA PROGRAMS?

The hardest part of any journey is always the first step. The thought of exercising is often daunting and intimidating, so it's easy to find excuses as to why not. But Mana provides a very supportive and welcoming environment to begin your journey. There is no competition with anyone except yourself. The Mana Tribe are all from different backgrounds with different goals. There is no judgement, just encouragement and a friendly atmosphere to move, connect and to work on your health and wellbeing.

WHAT IS SOMETHING UNIQUE ABOUT YOU?

I don't think I'm really that unique, but others have suggested I have a unique ability to relate to a wide range of people no matter their background or their position. I can hold a conversation with anyone, particularly after a few drinks, and have met some interesting people over the years. I did get to shake Princess Diana and Prince Charles's hands when I was a kid and they toured New Zealand, I guess that's unique.
